How high and low pressure, fronts, wind, land and sea breezes, lightning and monsoons affect diving — and how to make the right go/no-go call.

No environmental factor decides whether a dive goes ahead as often as the weather. Wind makes waves and surface current, decides whether a boat ride is bearable or sickening, and decides whether a shore entry is in the surf. Thunderstorms make open water life-threatening. And over the longer term, seasons and monsoons determine the visibility, the water temperature and the presence of exactly the animals divers travel for.

The good news: short-term weather is reasonably predictable, and with a few basic principles you can estimate what is coming yourself. You will learn how high- and low-pressure systems steer the weather, why the wind blows, the difference between offshore and onshore wind for the diver, how to read clouds and an approaching front, and why lightning is the only true absolute "no" in this whole guide.

Weather, wind, waves, current: the chain. The Sun heats the Earth unevenly. That creates pressure and temperature differences, which create wind, wind creates waves and surface current, and seasons bring the plankton and the big animals. Weather sits at the top of the chain of almost all surface conditions a diver experiences.

Understanding the weather

Air pressure: highs and lows steer the weather

The atmosphere has weight, and that weight differs from place to place. Where air sinks, it piles up and a high-pressure system forms: sinking air suppresses cloud formation, so you get calm, clear, often windless weather — good dive days. Where air rises, a low-pressure system forms: rising air cools, water vapour condenses into cloud, and you get cloud, wind and precipitation — often poor dive conditions. Wind is simply air flowing from high to low pressure to even out the difference. The greater the pressure difference over a distance, the harder it blows. On a weather map you see this in the isobars: close together means a large pressure difference and strong wind.

Let an inflated balloon deflate: the air shoots from the high pressure inside to the low pressure outside. Wind is exactly that, on the scale of the atmosphere. The greater the pressure difference (the tighter the balloon), the harder the flow.

Fronts: the change of weather

Where a warm and a cold air mass meet lies a front. As a front approaches the weather changes: increasing cloud, veering wind and precipitation. For the diver the most important signal is not the exact front type but the pattern: a clear blue sky that gradually acquires high, wispy cloud, then lower and thicker cloud, with rising wind, almost always means worse weather is coming. An approaching front is your cue to bring the dive forward or call it off.

Wind: the most important weather factor for divers

Of all weather, wind affects the diver most directly, because wind makes waves and surface current. Two things are crucial: force and direction. Force is measured in Beaufort. As a rule of thumb, diving becomes questionable to impossible from about force 5 to 6 on many sites, depending on direction, shelter and fetch.

Direction matters as much as force. Offshore wind (from land to sea) keeps the water flat near the coast, because the waves cannot build there (little fetch on the shore side). Pleasant for the entry, but with a treacherous risk: at the surface you drift away from shore easily, and a tired or clumsy head is blown out to sea. Onshore wind (from sea to land) builds waves and surf against the coast, making shore entries rough, but at least you drift towards land if there is a problem.

Land and sea breezes explain the daily rhythm on many tropical sites. By day the land warms faster than the sea; the warm air over the land rises, and cooler sea air flows in: a sea breeze that picks up in the afternoon. At night and early morning it reverses (an offshore land breeze) and the water is often calmest. Hence the wisdom "dive early": the morning is usually flatter than the afternoon.

Scenario. A diver does a shore dive in fine, flat conditions thanks to offshore wind. At the surface after the dive they notice they are further from shore than expected, and the wind is pushing them further out. The flat sea that made the entry so pleasant hides the danger of offshore wind. Anyone who knows this keeps extra distance from open water and signals earlier.

Reading clouds

You don't need to be a cloud expert, but a few patterns help. High, thin wispy cloud (cirrus) that gradually increases is often the herald of an approaching front — worse weather within a day. Cumulus clouds that grow tall during the day (into cumulonimbus) mean a chance of a (thunder)shower later, especially in the tropics and in summer. A dark, low, threatening cloud base with wind suddenly picking up means a shower or thunderstorm is near — get out of the water. Calm, flat or barely cloudy skies under high pressure usually mean a stable, good dive day.

Did you know? A towering cumulonimbus (anvil cloud) can grow into a fierce thunderstorm within an hour in the tropics. In areas like Indonesia and Mozambique a brilliant morning can therefore turn by the afternoon. Hence, again: plan your dive early, while the air is still stable.

Thunderstorms and lightning: the absolute no

Water is a good conductor, and open water is flat with a diver as the highest point — exactly what lightning seeks. A thunderstorm is therefore the one environmental factor in this guide that justifies an absolute stop, not a judgement call. If a storm approaches, do not enter the water, or get out immediately and away from the water's edge. On a boat: stay low, away from metal masts and railings, heading for safe harbour. Rule of thumb "30-30": if there is less than 30 seconds between lightning and thunder (storm within ~10 km), it is too close; after the last thunder, wait at least 30 minutes before entering again.

Why lightning is not a judgement call. With waves, current or wind you make a judgement: how much, what level, what risk. With lightning you do not. The outcome of a strike is so catastrophic and the chance real enough that there is only one right answer: out of the water. Remember this as the hard limit of the whole guide.

Seasons and monsoons in the tropics

In temperate regions the weather turns mainly on the succession of high- and low-pressure systems and fronts. In the tropics, monsoons dominate: seasonal wind directions that set the dive season. A monsoon can shelter a coast for months (calm sea, good visibility, high season) and expose the same coast in the other season to wind and swell (rough, poor visibility, low season). Moreover, the seasons often coincide with the presence of the big animals: plankton-rich water in one season brings manta rays and whale sharks, in the other it does not. For the travelling diver this means: choose your destination and your month. The same place can be world-class in the right month and nearly undiveable in the wrong one.

Real-world examples

The Netherlands. Classic temperate weather, steered by Atlantic lows and fronts. Wind (often south-westerly) and the succession of depressions determine the diveability of the North Sea coast and Oosterschelde. A high-pressure system gives the best days. Summer thunderstorms come with growing cumulus.

Egypt (Red Sea). Mostly stable, sunny, little precipitation. The northerly wind is the deciding factor: it makes the open sea choppy and affects boat routes, especially on the northern reef points. Little thunderstorm activity, but wind can steer liveaboards for days.

Indonesia (Bali, Raja Ampat, Komodo). Strongly monsoon-driven. The wet and dry seasons set visibility, sea and diveability per region, and the seasons differ between west (Bali) and east (Raja Ampat). Tropical thunderstorms build quickly in the afternoon; morning dives are often the calmest.

Maldives. Two monsoons: the drier, calmer "iruvai" (north-east) and the wetter, windier "hulhangu" (south-west). The monsoon decides on which side of the atoll the best visibility and manta aggregations sit.

Mozambique (Tofo and Vilanculos). At Tofo wind is the daily lead actor: offshore or onshore wind decides whether the surf launch through the break is feasible, and the summer months (roughly November to March) bring warmer, plankton-rich water with whale sharks and mantas, but also more chance of storms. Winter (roughly May to September) is cooler and often windier. At Vilanculos the shelter of the Bazaruto islands gives calmer water, but wind and tide together still steer the boat trips; the rainy season (summer) can temporarily reduce visibility. For both: choose your month by the animals and the wind.
