Both Uganda and Rwanda protect mountain gorillas, both run superbly organised treks, and both will give you the same unforgettable hour. So which should you choose? Having guided in Bwindi and Volcanoes for years, here is our honest comparison.
The Price Difference
The permit gap is the headline: USD 800 in Uganda against USD 1,500 in Rwanda (2026), with Uganda offering USD 600 low-season permits in April, May and November. For a couple, choosing Uganda saves USD 1,400 or more before any other cost. Rwanda positions itself deliberately at the premium end, pairing the higher permit with a polished, low-volume experience.
Getting There
Rwanda wins on logistics. Volcanoes National Park lies about 2.5 hours from Kigali International Airport on excellent roads, which makes a gorilla trek feasible in a long weekend, as in our 4-day Rwanda itinerary. Bwindi is a nine-hour-plus drive from Entebbe, though the smart route is to fly into Kigali anyway: from there Bwindi is four to five hours, the trick behind our 4-day Rwanda-Uganda combination, which pairs Rwanda’s golden monkeys with Uganda’s cheaper gorilla permit.
The Trek Itself
Bwindi is a dense, ancient rainforest, “Impenetrable” by name and occasionally by nature: treks run from two to seven hours over steep terrain, and the forest feels wilder. Volcanoes’ bamboo slopes are more open and treks average shorter, though altitude (2,500 metres and up) adds its own effort. Porters are available in both parks and hiring one directly supports local families; we always recommend it.
Beyond the Gorillas
This is where Uganda pulls ahead as a destination: chimpanzees in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel and Lake Bunyonyi’s island scenery can all join the same journey, as in our 10-day Uganda safari. Rwanda counters with golden monkeys, the moving Kigali Genocide Memorial, Akagera’s Big Five savanna and the tidiest capital in Africa.

Is the gorilla experience different between the two countries?
The hour with the gorillas is the same species, the same rules and the same magic. The differences are the hike, the logistics and the price.
Which trek is harder?
Bwindi’s treks are usually longer and steeper; Volcanoes is shorter on average but at higher altitude. Average fitness suffices for both, and porters help enormously.
Can I do both countries in one trip?

What is the minimum age?

When is the best time to trek?
